A merger of two of the biggest and most successful teams in professional cycling is apparently in the offing.
As "Wielerflits" reports, the team Jumbo-Visma with Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard and Soudal - Quick Step with time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel are in advanced talks. A finalisation of the merger is only a matter of time. According to dpa information, rumours about the merger have been circulating in rider circles for several weeks.
Next year, the racing team will ride under the name Soudal-Visma. As the supermarket chain Jumbo is withdrawing as the main sponsor, the Dutch team, which won all three major national tours this year, is looking for new financial backers. Investors from Saudi Arabia were recently under discussion.
The merger is likely to trigger a number of high-calibre rider transfers, as Jumbo has 27 and Soudal 23 professionals under contract for the coming year. The maximum team size is 30 riders. Former world champion Evenepoel has been looking to switch to the British Ineos team for some time now. Giro winner Primoz Roglic is no longer happy with his role at Jumbo and has been linked to several teams.
