The 103rd edition of Tre Valli Varesine was originally planned to cover 200.3 kilometres from Busto Arsizio to Varese. The traditional circuit around the finish was planned for the finale. However, extreme rain thwarted the riders' plans on Tuesday. The route was initially shortened to 168.3 kilometres, but the conditions did not improve, on the contrary: the roads were flooded. As a result, the race was cancelled after three laps of the final circuit. At this point, a breakaway group was at the front, including the two Germans Georg Steinhauser (EF Education EasyPost) and Felix Engelhardt (Team Jayco-AlUla).
Tadej Pogacar, who is putting the finishing touches to his work at Tre Valli Varesine for the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday, was in favour of the decision to cancel the race. "We understand the organisers, who want us to race. Ultimately, the riders made the right decision not to continue," said the Slovenian, who described the precarious conditions from his point of view. "On the last lap we rode, I was in second position behind (Alessandro) Covi on the descent and we couldn't see where we were going."
Earlier, the women's race of Tre Valli Varesine had to be shortened from the original 136.3 to 108.7 kilometres. The victory went to Cedrine Kerbaol (Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling Team) ahead of Silvia Persico (UAE Team ADQ) and the German Liane Lippert (Movistar), who had won the race in 2023.
