The German retailer Lidl joins cycling as the main sponsor.

The Trek-Segafredo racing team, which rides under a US licence, has announced that it will ride under the name Lidl-Trek from 30 June.

The sponsorship includes both the men's team led by the Danish former world champion Mads Pedersen and the women's team with the Italian stars Elisa Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini. The team did not name a running time.

Lidl has already been involved with the Belgian Quick-Step team in the past. The deal with Trek is now likely to be more extensive. The racing team emerged from the former RadioShack team in 2014, for which Andreas Klöden, Jens Voigt and Linus Gerdemann, among others, were active. There are currently no German riders under contract with Trek, with Olympic track champion Lisa Klein riding for the women.
