The German Cycling League kicks off the new season on Easter weekend. The first competition of Germany's most important racing series in road cycling will take place on 4 April (Holy Saturday) at the Sachsenring near Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Two days later, the juniors will kick off the season in Schönaich. For the women and juniors, the national league begins in mid-May.

It is a place with a great cycling tradition. Although the Sachsenring is primarily a race track for motorbike racing, a legendary world championship cycling race took place here in 1960, in which Bernhard Eckstein won ahead of his GDR team-mate Täve Schur. From 2019 to 2021, the German Elite Road Race Championships were held on the route. The German Cycling League season now begins at the Sachsenring with the first race for men's points. A total of ten races are on the calendar this year. In addition to established events, the Bundesliga season finale for men and juniors at Rund um Sebnitz is back on the calendar. The Grand Prix of the City of Trier is part of the Bundesliga for the first time. The juniors will also contest ten classification races. The season opener in this age group (U19) will take place on 6 April at Rund um Schönaich.

Twelve competitions for women and juniors

For the women and juniors, there are twelve competitions that count towards the overall ranking of the most important national race series. The season opener will take place on 14 May in Waldburg in Upper Swabia. Three races at the RiderMan in Bad Dürrheim will conclude the national league. "Many organisers have been loyal to the association and the German Cycling League for many years now. But we are also delighted to welcome new events," Günter Schabel, Vice President of Competitive Sports at German Cycling, was quoted as saying in a press release from the cycling association.

There are 245 riders registered for the men's event, spread across 20 teams, plus 36 individual starters. In the juniors, there are 130 riders in twelve teams and 40 individual riders. 191 women and juniors want to start in the national league, while the proportion of women's teams is 14 and that of junior teams is seven; there are also 14 individual starters. Several teams from neighbouring countries have also entered. Last year, REMBE | rad-net dominated the series, celebrating a triple victory in the individual classification with Ole Theiler, Johannes Adamietz and Miguel Heidemann and also winning the team classification. "In the women's race, it will certainly be exciting between the riders of the three Continental teams," says Schabel, who therefore sees the LKT, Wheel Divas and REMBE | rad-net women teams as the favourites. Last year's winner Lydia Ventker is not on the entry list.
