The talented German cyclist Marius Mayrhofer has celebrated his first professional victory. The 22-year-old won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Race in Geelong, Australia, which is part of the WorldTour.

After 174.3 kilometres, the rider from Tübingen was faster in the sprint than the Frenchman Hugo Page and the Australian Tour stage winner Simon Clarke. Mayrhofer had already attracted attention last week with two top ten finishes at the Tour Down Under.

"This means everything to me. I won my last race as a junior. I became a cyclist to win races. I never managed to do that in my entire U23 time and now I finally have this victory," said Mayrhofer. He tactically opened the sprint early and won confidently in the end with a lead of one bike length. "I've been dreaming of this victory for so long, I can't believe what's happened."

Mayrhofer once finished second at the Junior World Championships

Mayrhofer is under contract with Team DSM and is in his second year as a professional. The Swabian sees himself as a classics rider and wants to shine in one-day races. Mayrhofer's dream is to win the World Championships. He already attracted attention on a larger stage in 2018 at the junior race of the Road World Championships in Innsbruck.

Mayrhofer took second place on the difficult course - behind today's world champion and Vuelta winner Remco Evenepoel from Belgium.
