The German lorry driver detained following the fatal road accident involving professional cyclist Davide Rebellin has been released from extradition custody in Münster.

This was confirmed by senior public prosecutor Daniel Dependahl from the public prosecutor's office in Hamm on enquiry. However, this does not clarify whether the defendant will be extradited to Italy or not. "The proceedings will continue," explained Dependahl. The man had handed himself in to the authorities in Steinfurt last Thursday accompanied by his defence lawyer.

Extradition to Italy?

The lorry driver allegedly hit Rebellin with his articulated lorry on 30 November 2022 near the northern Italian town of Montebello de Vicentino and fatally injured him. He is accused of causing death on the road - a criminal offence in Italy - and failing to render assistance. According to EU law, the German judiciary has 60 days to decide whether to extradite the man to Italy.
