Mouris, who became European junior champion against the clock last year, finished just seven seconds ahead of second place on the 22.6 kilometre course, which was also used by the U23 women. Silver went to the 17-year-old American Ashlin Barry, who in turn was only two seconds ahead of bronze and the 17-year-old Belgian Seff Van Kerckhove.
The German juniors had nothing to do with the medals. Benedikt Benz finished 22nd, 1:39 minutes behind Zeno Levi Winter, who was two seconds slower. 85 participants took part in the race.
"I can't believe I won," said Mouris after his ride to gold at the finish. "It was really, really hard today. I knew from the previous time trials that a lot of guys would explode here and I tried to start conservatively." At the first intermediate time, Mouris was six seconds behind Van Kerckhove and three seconds behind Barry. He was then ahead at the second measuring point. "But it was still a long way to the finish line, a really tough battle." Although he lost a few more seconds in the final section, he still had a small cushion.
