The Slovenian professional cyclist from UAE Team Emirates also won the seventh stage over 142.9 kilometres up to the Col de la Couillole and thus extended his lead. Pogacar won by two seconds ahead of the Frenchman David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), followed six seconds behind by his great Danish rival Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). It was Pogacar's seventh win of the season.
The two-time Tour champion is now twelve seconds ahead of Gaudu and almost a minute ahead of Vingegaard in the overall standings. The tour ends on Sunday with the eighth and final stage around Nice. Although there are still five mountain classifications to conquer, the last 20 kilometres will take the riders down to Nice.
Two-time overall winner Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) did not start the race. The Bora-Hansgrohe team had already announced the day before, when the stage had been cancelled due to a storm, that the Berlin-born rider would abandon the race due to illness.
