On Saturday, the stars of cycling battled it out at Milan-San Remo for the first Momument of the year. The "Primavera" delivered spectacular photos. We have put together a best-of in our picture gallery.

Milan-San Remo has once again delivered: emotional moments and sporting fireworks in the finale. Numerous impressive photos were taken at Poggio and Cipressa, expressing the fascination of Milan-San Remo.

While the two top favourites Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) neutralised each other in the final, another rider from Alpecin-Deceuninck was celebrating in the end: Jasper Philipsen gave the Belgian team a successful title defence at Milan-San Remo after van der Poel's triumph last year.

The race was extremely close. In the final sprint, Philipsen fought for victory against Pogacar and the Australian Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla) and won by a narrow margin. For the 26-year-old, who has already won six stages of the Tour de France, it was his first victory in one of cycling's five monuments.

Stunning photos of Milan-San Remo 2024

But the great moments at Milan-San Remo this year were not limited to the finale and the final sprint on the Via Roma. The team presentation took place on Friday evening. And the first few kilometres on Saturday towards the Turchino Pass took riders through blossoming landscapes, giving the race the nickname "Ride into Spring".

A little later, the peloton reached the Ligurian coast. This provided the photographers with motifs for spectacular snapshots. For many riders, things were still quite relaxed in the peloton. However, the helpers of the captains, who were setting the pace at the front, hardly had a chance to enjoy the scenery. For them, the order of the day was to set the pace in order to catch up with the breakaway riders and put their bosses in position for the finale.

How do you like this article?

While Milan-San Remo is already history for this year, the next monument awaits around two weeks later with the Tour of Flanders. The photos that will be taken will probably be no less spectacular than the pictures from Italy.
