The Ultegra is the blue jeans of road bike groupsets: it fits all occasions. Manufacturers take them out of the cupboard to dress up the simple two-kilo aluminium frame as well as the super-light carbon frame of the latest generation. The Ultegra clientele now includes beginners and occasional riders as well as demanding kilometre riders who don't have an ego problem if they don't have the top Dura-Ace parts on their bike.
The most recent renovation two years ago made a decisive contribution to the popularity of the component ensemble. Since then, Ultegra has come so close to Dura-Ace in terms of technology that there are hardly any arguments for paying twice the price for the top-of-the-range groupset. Essential Ultegra parts such as cranks and brakes hardly differ technically and visually from their Dura-Ace counterparts. With ten sprockets on the rear hub, the finest technology and attractive design, Ultegra has since won many new fans. Major suppliers such as Cube, Red Bull and Stevens confirm in unison: they equipped 50 to 65 per cent of their road bikes sold last year with Ultegra.
