Anyone who doubted that aerodynamics and lightweight construction go together will be proven wrong by Trek. At 353 watts (with Cosmic Carbone SL; 349.7 watts with Trek's own Aeolus 5 wheels), the top model of the Madone series built in the USA delivers a good aero result, while at the same time the frameset is one of the lightest ever at 1,176 grams. This weight is made possible, among other things, by a special paint that is said to weigh five grams and - no joke - costs an extra 1,000 euros. There are probably two main reasons for the aero result: the Kammtails known from the SpeedConcept time trial model - aero profiles cut off at the rear to optimise flow and save weight - and extremely narrow fork blades. The latter produce the only discordant note in the test report. The fork has above-average lateral compliance, but this is largely compensated for by the stiff frame. Thanks to the Ride-Tuned seatpost, the bike is also very comfortable on the saddle. Advantage for licence riders: Because the frame is so light, the bike is lighter than the 6.8 kilos permitted by the UCI, even with top aero wheels.

*The aerodynamics grade is included in the overall grade with 20 per cent, the grade for the frame set with 80 per cent. Grades are calculated with all decimal places up to the final grade, but for the sake of clarity, all grades are given with rounded decimal places.
**Weighed weights.
***Manufacturer's specification, test size bold.
****Stack/Reach: projected vertical/horizontal measurement from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube; STR (Stack to Reach): Values 1.4-1.5 mean sporty riding position, below race-like, above comfortable.
