You can be lucky or unlucky with investments. Sometimes what is initially praised as a safe investment turns out to be a flop in the end. A risk that can be virtually ruled out with the 16 racing bikes between €2,300 and €2,800 in this test. Anyone who invests this much money in a road bike can expect to earn a lot of interest in the form of long-lasting riding pleasure. This is guaranteed by the sometimes impressively high technical level of these racers. Typical bikes in this price range weigh between seven and eight kilograms and are technically well equipped. Some suppliers even fulfil extravagant wishes such as electronic gears or fast aero wheels. What more could you want from a racing bike?
Spoilt for choice
Carbon is the trendy frame material in the price class: 14 of the 16 bikes have a frame made of the fibre composite material. Not so long ago, this marked the rise to the high-end class. Nevertheless, it is worth taking a closer look at the two bikes with aluminium frames. Despite their relatively heavy frames, they perform surprisingly well against their carbon counterparts. How is this possible? By the manufacturers investing the money they save on the frame in better equipment. And since the equipment makes up the largest part of the total weight, an aluminium racer can actually be lighter than a similarly expensive carbon model.
