Test: Campagnolo wheels
Record, Chorus, Centaur, Veloce - our test shows the current ten-speed groupsets from Campagnolo in direct comparison, mounted on twelve racers between 1,300 and 5,300 euros. (TOUR 4/2006)

Anyone looking specifically for a racing bike with Campagnolo equipment will soon realise that it is not easy to find one at all. Most bike manufacturers do not even have the components of the traditional Italian company in their programme for various reasons. One of these reasons: The Japanese competitor Shimano is much better known - especially among newcomers to road cycling. Shimano components are considered to be functionally first-class, reliable and affordable. Campagnolo, on the other hand, has a reputation - not without good reason - for being expensive, which is why the brand would not be considered by very price-orientated buyers.

This primarily causes problems for the mid-range Centaur and Veloce groupsets. Complete bikes with these groupsets rarely cost less than €1,500 - so you need good reasons to choose number three or four from the Campa catalogue and not number two or even one from the competition. Many 1,500 euro bikes at this price have Shimano's Ultegra groupset on board, some even have a classy Dura-Ace. On the other hand, the fact that Campa bikes are rare is an opportunity. And always just Ultegra is kind of boring. After all, not every road cyclist wants to brake and shift like everyone else. Manufacturers who equip their bikes with Campa parts therefore consciously accept that their bikes are somewhat more expensive than comparable Shimano racers. But in return, they also offer their customers a more or less exclusive alternative.

The test gave the TOUR team the rare opportunity to directly compare all Campa ten-speed groupsets. What can the expensive Record do better than the inexpensive Veloce? Does the truth lie in the middle and is it Chorus or Centaur? Which Campa groupset is suitable for whom?
