Test 2018: Steel racers from 1200 to 9000 euros
Steel still has its fans. In fact, the traditional material is currently experiencing a small revival, especially among young brands. Six bikes show what is technically and stylistically feasible.
The quartz watch was not the end of the mechanical watch, the CD not the death of the vinyl record. There are also still good arguments in favour of steel as a frame material. Its extra weight compared to carbon and aluminium is generally overrated. And from the point of view of sustainability, steel is the first choice due to its comparatively environmentally friendly production and good repair options. However, steel racers are no longer necessarily cheaper than carbon and aluminium models. The prices of handcrafted frames made in Europe are particularly steep.
