Like the big American brands, Merckx also relies on a high-quality aluminium frame in this class. Although it is not as finely crafted as the competition's, it has an independent design and is relatively light. Nevertheless, the bike is the heaviest in the test, which must be due to the equipment. A 105 groupset instead of the more common Ultegra and simple Shimano wheels with rigid clincher tyres weigh the most. As a result, the bike is no rocket uphill, but downhill it's calm and composed. The steering geometry with plenty of trail contributes to this smoothness. The riding position is relaxed, and comfort is largely provided by the wide tyres. Still a fair offer considering the price.
ConclusionRelatively light aluminium frame; with simple equipment but the heaviest bike in the test. Functionally flawless, very smooth running
