The matt black anodised, barely sloped aluminium frame of the Aspin ranks in the midfield according to the laboratory measurements; the fact that it can't quite keep up with the mail order competition is mainly due to the high weight of the frameset. In terms of equipment, on the other hand, Stevens can hold its own against the direct-to-consumer competitors - a complete Shimano-Ultegra groupset is not a matter of course in this test field. The triple crankset easily helps you up steep climbs, and the other components, all in black, are also consistently good. The frame basically allows a neutral riding position, but with a 120 millimetre stem and a handlebar with a lot of pre-bend, you have to stretch more than the STR factor suggests. The frame set is also available from Stevens for € 599 as a platform for the extensive modular system.
