Until now, many manufacturers have initially developed their frames in medium sizes and then lengthened or shortened the tubes for other sizes. As a result, very large and very small frames in particular often deviate from the engineers' development goals, which is reflected, for example, in the fact that small frames are often stiffer than large ones, although it should be the other way round.
With the new Tarmac models, each size has now been designed with specific tube diameters and stiffness values. Specialized therefore guarantees every Tarmac rider, regardless of whether they are 1.65 or 1.90 metres tall, a bike and riding experience that is perfectly tailored to them. Such a promise is hardly verifiable, as each test rider can only judge the size that suits them.
For the model we rode with mechanical Dura-Ace and carbon clincher wheels from Roval, however, it can be said that the developers from Morgan Hill have succeeded in creating an outstandingly well-tuned racing machine. From the very first metre, the rider has the feeling of merging with the bike to form a single unit. The propulsion and riding stability are in a class of their own, the riding experience is exhilarating. Although designed primarily for racing and with a correspondingly sporty geometry, the bike absorbs vibrations and small bumps remarkably well. This is also reflected in the measured values that we were able to determine on one of the first production frames.
In terms of weight and riding stability, the new S-Works Tarmac is on a similar, very good level as its predecessor, the S-Works Tarmac SL4; in terms of comfort on the saddle and bottom bracket stiffness, it has even been able to improve. It will be exciting to compare the different frame sizes. A corresponding test is planned as soon as the models are available.
