Mountain bike specialist Rotwild is poaching in foreign territory: the "R S1-CX" is the first series-produced cross road bike from the Hessian manufacturer. The highlight: mechanical disc brakes from Shimano. (TOUR 11/2006)

The year is 2006 AD. Hydraulic disc brakes have long since established themselves as the best technical solution for mountain bikes. Cross-country racing bikes, on the other hand, are still ploughing through the terrain with cantilever brakes that are difficult to adjust and difficult to modulate. Their effectiveness drops dramatically, especially at high speeds and in wet conditions, while dust and mud promote rapid rim wear. An anachronism that drives Peter Böhm up the wall. "If I sell a bike with brakes that don't correspond to the state of the art, I'm acting negligently as a manufacturer," complains the graduate engineer. Böhm is a developer at ADP Engineering in Dietzenbach, Hesse, the manufacturer of the Rotwild brand, which is primarily known for its mountain bikes. It was always clear to him that if Rotwild decided to build cross racing bikes, it would have to be with modern braking technology.
