But with the 29-inch MTB tyres and the smallest gear ratio of 26-36, you can really tackle anything that is still marked as a path on the map. The sturdy steel frame can be welded anywhere in the world, and with a record-breaking five bottle cage positions, even the most remote wastelands lose their terror. The Fargo could be the forerunner of a new type of bike that is emerging from a kind of self-sufficient long-distance off-road brevet scene. The best-known event is probably the Tour Divide - a cycle route that covers more than 4,400 kilometres, 90 percent of which is off-road, across North America and is also held as a race once a year. Participants are self-sufficient in the strictest sense, so they must have everything they need with them.
The bag set on the Fargo 2 comes from Revelate Designs, is customised and is already very generously sized. The Salsa can also be fitted with luggage racks and corresponding panniers using the sturdy threaded eyelets on the rear triangle and fork, but unfortunately the bike would no longer be visible in the photo. But equipped in this way, you could easily live on the bike for a long time.
