Clear vote: All four testers named the Pro DX Cross as their favourite among the affordable crossers. Somewhat surprisingly, the bike is by no means designed as a flawless racing machine, but as an all-rounder.

Eyelets for mudguards and pannier racks and even a kickstand mount on the rear triangle indicate a wide range of uses, including as a winter or touring bike; the riding position on the short frame is relaxed. Nevertheless, the bike can also be ridden at a sporty pace. The testers liked the agile steering and Shimano's new mechanical Ultegra gear system with eleven sprockets. The frame is well made, but the internal gear cable routing is fiddly. This is better solved on Rose's road frame.
