Randonneur bikes are not exactly the most Italian of all road bike variants. This makes it all the more striking when two traditional Italian brands present steel racers that are designed for long distances and tours with luggage.

For the Ulisse by Basso, company founder Alcide Basso himself reaches for the soldering torch. The muffled frame is made from comparatively voluminous Mannesmann tubes. This has long been history. However, Basso stocked up on tubes from the German manufacturer more than 20 years ago and still has several sets in stock. Thanks to the elaborate six-layer paintwork and electrochemical pre-treatment, corrosion should not be an issue for the Ulisse in the long term. The head tube has been extended beyond the upper sleeve for a long-distance riding position. The frame and fork have mounts for cantilever and disc brakes. One detail that has advantages when riding with heavy luggage is the fork stop, which makes it more difficult for the bike to suddenly tip over when parked. The Ulisse frame set costs 2,150 euros and is available in six sizes from 50 to 60 centimetres.

Tommasini is focussing even more on classic lines with the Sintesi randonée model. Slim tubes, plenty of chrome trim on the fork, rear triangle and lugs: The frame could have been built in the 1980s. On request, Tommasini can even supply the Sinesi with a threaded fork and classic stem. The wheel openings are designed for 28-millimetre-wide tyres and mudguards, and eyelets for pannier racks are available. The frame set costs 1,760 euros.
