How much bike can you get for 500 euros? TOUR put it to the test and bought five racing bikes incognito - in large bike markets, discounters and small specialist shops.

Result of our random test purchase campaign: There are racing bikes for 500 euros, but the first hurdle on the way to the cheap racers is to find them. Brochures and dealer websites can provide an indication - but they are not a reliable source, as the range on offer in the shops is often completely different. The quality of advice was very inconsistent, but as a customer you can't hope for a detailed consultation for a 500 euro road bike. As these are often discontinued models or remaining stock, it is sometimes difficult to find a bike in the right size. In the practical test, all bikes - with the exception of the "Bikespace" with its poor wheels - were reliable companions, well suited for beginners or as inexpensive second or winter bikes. Of course, you shouldn't expect any technical highlights for the money, as you'll find inexpensive road bike technology from ten years ago. Eight-speed transmissions are outdated and do not offer the shifting comfort of modern nine- and ten-speed transmissions. The Shimano 2200 components, some of which are fitted, are not much fun in continuous use. For beginners, however, this need not be an obstacle to having fun on the road. Basically, the bikes are also a useful basis that can be gradually upgraded with comparatively little effort - for example with better tyres and brake pads.
