Frame builder Dario Pegoretti shows what can happen if you don't give him any guidelines for the design of a bike... (TOUR 2/2007)

This bike is irritating. One colleague from the editorial team wanted to paint the rolling provocation with stain. Another thought it must have been a toddler experimenting with finger paint. Spontaneous judgements such as "ugly" or "horrible" were heard, while others took their time with their assessment. A few categorised the bike as "wicked" or even "totally awesome" - and one would have loved to buy it on the spot. Dario Pegoretti, the creator of this excitement in the shape of a racing bike, is amused by such reactions. He had nothing else in mind when he gave the steel frame, which was initially painted an immaculate creamy white, a special treatment.

Beyond such considerations, the "Marcelo" model, which Pegoretti built especially for TOUR, is one thing above all: a sophisticated, perfectly equipped racing bike with a very elegant silhouette in every detail. The frame made of thin-walled, large-volume steel tubes from Columbus impresses on the test bench with reassuring stiffness values. Its weight - around two kilos - is fine for a steel frame of this size, and the clean weld seams reveal 20 years of experience.
