The Eddy Merckx racing bike brand has been somewhat quiet of late. Following the entry of a brewery entrepreneur, who took over all company shares in 2013, this is set to change again.

The renovated product range is sending out the first positive signals. In addition to the very uniquely designed top model EMX 525, which was introduced in 2012, two completely new models form the important centrepiece of the range. The San Remo 76, named after Merckx's seventh victory in the 1976 Milan-San Remo classic, takes on the role of the typical competition bike.

The riding position is stretched, characteristic features of the carbon frame are an aerodynamically shaped seat post and asymmetrical chainstays for optimised power transmission. The second new model, the Mourenx 69, is of the same quality as the San Remo 76. The name refers to an epic solo victory by Merckx in a Tour stage in 1969, thus giving the model its name: As a typical marathon racer, it has a slightly shorter top tube and longer head tube. Accordingly, the riding position is comparatively upright.

We have already been able to test the San Remo 76, which makes a convincing impression straight away. The riding stability leaves nothing to be desired, and the frame conveys a high degree of confidence thanks to its smooth ride on a sharp serpentine descent. The set-up is firm, but not too harsh. The price range for both models starts at € 2,499 with the new Shimano 105 groupset and ends at € 3,899 with the electronic Ultegra Di2 groupset. Merckx offers a lifetime guarantee on the frame. Five frame sizes are available.
