Cross bikes up to 5000 euros
Cross is a polarising topic. For some, the unsprung off-road racing bikes with their antiquated braking technology are a thing of the past - technically outdated and at a clear disadvantage compared to modern mountain bikes. On the other hand, there is a growing group of fans for whom the appeal of crossers lies precisely in their technical limitations - according to the motto: what the bike doesn't compensate for with its suspension, the rider has to iron out with his riding technique. The desire for thrills may play a small part in this view. But one thing is certain: if you can control your road bike on loose surfaces, you are also a better rider on tarmac.
To take the wind out of the sails of cross critics, it would be enough for manufacturers to seriously address the issue of brakes. The brakes on studded racers in particular are often the subject of fierce criticism. Stuttering forks and howling pads without bite are still the order of the day on cross bikes.

Munich is actually a biking stronghold - and not just because of the nearby mountains. But the mountain bike boom, which once pushed the cross bike out of the terrain, is now 20 years old. And so more and more cyclists who have swapped wide tyres for narrow studded tyres have recently been romping around the Isar floodplains of the Bavarian capital: Cross is cool again - and not just in Munich. Real cross strongholds are Hamburg and Berlin, where real scenes have developed around the studded racing bike.
What is striking is that high-end models are extremely rare. Instead, bikes with robust aluminium frames that can withstand the occasional fall dominate. The same applies to the equipment: Instead of high-end components, most bikes are fitted with tried and tested but less prestigious components such as a Shimano "Ultegra" or "105" groupset. The fact that cross bikes are obviously more focussed on price is not only due to the fact that they are usually second or third bikes. More importantly, the wear and tear is much higher than on road bikes. Bearings and drive components in particular suffer extremely from constant exposure to dirt and moisture and have to be replaced frequently. This costs significantly less if the parts come from a cheaper group. As a rule, the function is hardly any worse.
