Insane, incredible, sensational - superlatives are the only way to do justice to the lightest frame on the market. The matt black featherweight is the feasibility study of the Cervélo engineers that has been transferred to a small series - manufactured in California with horrendous effort.

The seat tube with its slack seat angle is an example of how literally every gram was haggled over. It is factory-matched to seat posts without offset because they are lighter. The R5 Ca also features German engineering: the fork is supplied by German specialist THM. Uphill, such a light bike always gives the feeling of being able to ride in a higher gear than with other models.
More important, however, is the secure feeling downhill - and the R5 Ca conveys this without restriction (90 km/h downhill from Kühtai). The joy of riding is only dampened by the realisation that the dream values in the laboratory are apparently diametrically opposed to good aerodynamics - see also Canyon. Cervélo knows this and is therefore focussing its sales efforts more on the aero model S5 VWD (see TOUR-Test 2/2012->).

ConclusionWhen does the kilometre mark fall? The frame set of the R5 Ca remains just above this mark. Nevertheless, it remains unwaveringly stable.

*The overall grade includes: the aerodynamics grade with 20 per cent and the grade for the frame set with 80 per cent. The grades are calculated up to the final grade with all decimal places; however, for the sake of clarity, all grades are given with rounded decimal places.
**Weighed weights.
***Manufacturer's specification, test size bold.
****Stack/Reach: projected vertical/horizontal measurement from the centre of the bottom bracket to the upper edge of the headset cap; STR (Stack to Reach): Values 1.45-1.55 mean a sporty riding position, below that race-like, above that comfortable.
