The frame set is based on the lightweight team bike and top model SLR01 and is identical on the outside except for the paintwork. Thicker, but fewer fibre mats help to save on material and production costs.
BMC specifies a weight of 1,230 grams for the size 54 frame; initial test rides in the Swiss mountains and experience with other carbon frames suggest that such models tend to be stiffer than the lightweight versions. The test bike, painted fiery red, is fitted with the middle of three equipment variants with a mix of Tiagra and 105 components as well as Shimano's heavy but solid WH-R501 wheels. The riding pleasure was somewhat dampened by the weak, somewhat scratchy pads of the Tiagra brakes and the tough Ultra Sport tyres from Conti - wear parts that can be replaced quickly and inexpensively.
Otherwise, the functional mix was convincing all round. Despite the rather high weight of nine kilos, the bike is a lot of fun to ride, the riding position is pleasantly sporty with a stack-to-reach ratio of 1.45, but not as stretched as on the aero model TMR.
The frame will be available in five sizes from 47 to 60 centimetres, the other two equipment variants come with Shimano Sora or with a complete 105 groupset and WH-RS10 wheels. Prices will not be announced until Eurobike.
