The wheelset builds on the 303 S and expands Zipp’s S-Collection. The range also includes the 303S XPLR, which features a wider rim and is designed for use on gravel bikes. The 50-millimetre rim height is based on the Firecrest design used in the WorldTour. The medium-height all-round profile is designed to combine good aerodynamics with crosswind stability. The total weight of the wheelset is 1,585 grams. According to the manufacturer, the design is said to save 2 watts of pedalling power compared to the 303 S.
The inner rim width of the 404S is 23 millimetres and is designed for road tyres between 28 and 39 mm. The front wheel has 20 spokes, the rear wheel 24. The Sapim CX-Sprint spokes are laced in a double-cross pattern. The carbon rims are designed for tubeless tyres and feature Centre-Lock brake disc mounts; the hubs are fitted with industrial-grade stainless steel bearings.
The Zipp 76/176 hubs offer 36 engagement points for the freehub. Two freehub bodies are available for the rear wheel: SRAM 10/11-speed or XDR for 12-speed cassettes.
The wheelset is available in two decal designs. The white version matches the wheels used by the Pro Teams. The dark grey version offers a more understated look. Both versions cost the same.
Zipp offers a lifetime warranty on the 404 S. The Crash Replacement Programme allows damaged wheelsets to be replaced at a reduced rate. These benefits apply to all Zipp wheelsets.
The front wheel costs 530 euros, whilst the rear wheel costs 570 euros. These prices apply regardless of the chosen decal colour and freehub body. The maximum tyre pressure is 73 psi or 5.0 bar, depending on the tyre width. The maximum system weight is 115 kilograms.
The wheelset will be available in shops from 30 June 2026. As well as the 404 S for road cycling, the S-Collection also includes the 303 XPLR S for gravel riding and the 1ZERO HITOP S for cross-country mountain biking.
