The British wheel manufacturer Hunt has presented the new Sub50 Limitless Aero Disc wheelset and aims to offer a particularly exceptional balance between stiffness, weight, aerodynamics and comfort. The wheels are designed for wide tyres and should therefore perform better aerodynamically than the competition. The British company achieves a low weight and good stiffness values primarily through the use of carbon spokes. A less lightweight but cheaper version is available with classic steel spokes.
The press release states that the Hunt development team has set itself the goal of creating the absolutely fastest all-round road wheelset with a maximum rim height of 50 millimetres and for tyre widths of 28 to 30 millimetres. Hunt is thus targeting a broad audience, as a rim height of 50 millimetres is considered a good compromise between weight, aerodynamics and susceptibility to crosswinds. The optimisation to a tyre width of 28 to 30 millimetres is also a contemporary setup. According to the manufacturer, the Sub50 Limitless Aero are the first road bike wheels with an outer width of more than 30 millimetres.
For the development, Hunt carried out extensive tests in the GST wind tunnel in Immenstaad on Lake Constance, which TOUR also uses for its measurements. In some cases, the Hunt Sub50 Limitless Aero was able to outperform rims of a significantly higher design such as the Zipp 454 NSW (58 millimetre rim height) in terms of aerodynamics. As documentation of the development process, Hunt published a very detailed white paper.
The first delivery of HUNT SUB50 Limitless Aero Disc wheels can be pre-ordered from Hunt Bike Wheels in extremely limited quantities from 1 February. The majority of stock will arrive at the end of February 2024 - and the CeramicSpeed wheels at the end of April 2024.
