Vision worked closely with seven professional racing teams to develop the new wheels. The teams involved include EF Pro Cycling, Bahrain Victorious, Astana Qazaqstan and Arkéa-Samsic from the World Tour as well as Uno-X Pro Cycling Team, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA and Burgos-BH. Thanks to this co-operation, the Metron wheels should be optimally adapted to the requirements of professional cycling. The manufacturer promises the best performance in terms of both aerodynamics and rolling resistance, especially in combination with 28 to 30 millimetre wide tubeless tyres.
Technical equipment
A central element of the new wheels is the revised hub with PRS system (Power Ratchet System). This has a 72-tooth clutch which, according to Vision, not only offers the best engagement angle, but also ensures smoother running. The manufacturer claims that the new hub is up to 24 per cent faster than the previous generation - although there is no indication of which value the manufacturer is referring to. The rims are made entirely of carbon and designed to be tubeless-ready. They have a centre lock mount for the brake discs and are equipped with six sealed industrial bearings - two at the front and four at the rear.
Vision relies on 2:1 spoking with aerodynamically shaped flat spokes for the Metron 45-60 SL. The front wheel is fitted with 21 spokes, the rear wheel with 24. The manufacturer emphasises that each wheel is built by hand, which is intended to guarantee particularly high quality. The silver decals that give the new edition its name are designed as water transfer stickers and are intended to create a reflective effect.
Two profile heights for different applications
The Metron 45-60 SL Silver Edition is available in two different versions, which differ in the profile height of the rims. The flatter 45-millimetre rims are particularly suitable for climbers and lighter riders, while the 60-millimetre version is primarily intended to offer advantages at higher speeds on the flat or in sprints. Vision is positioning the Metron wheels as the top model for uncompromising competition use. The manufacturer states that the wheels are used in both professional road cycling and triathlon. The co-operation with the World Tour teams not only serves the development, but also as a marketing tool to demonstrate the performance of the wheels.
