What criteria do you use to choose your wheels? Technology, appearance or price? We have arguments for everything. 17 wheelsets in a comparison test - from practice to the wind tunnel. (TOUR 6/2006)

The old master's hand immediately goes purposefully to the aero flounders from Vuelta. The black wheels, which turn every forest and meadow racer into a rocket, must be fitted to the bike. Even after more than 30 years in the saddle, veteran racer Uli Rottler still succumbs to the allure of the material when the test wheels are lined up in front of him in the sun at the TOUR training camp in Cambrils. The somewhat outdated Centurion racer of our tour guide suddenly looks incredibly attractive again with aero rims and also a little bit mean.

Uli Rottler is not alone with his reflexes. The camp guests also favour expensive carbon, bikes that look great and those that are particularly light. Clear number one in the readers' favour: anything that says "lightweight" on it. Carbon is attractive anyway, of course. But Lightweight bakes the entire wheel, including spokes and hub body, from the magic material. Carbon in potency, so to speak. And the technical extravagance is complemented by the aura of the Tour de France-finished super material. Irresistible. The "sensible" bikes have to take a back seat. Wheels that promise problem-free function but little spectacle with aluminium rims and medium weight are not particularly popular at first.

SHORT & SHORT

With a set of eye-catching wheels, you can transform your ordinary everyday racer into either a razor-sharp looking, cutting-edge aero sword or a delicate, light-footed climbing machine in the blink of an eye. At up to 3,000 euros per set, manufacturers pay an extremely high price for low weight. Good aerodynamic qualities, on the other hand, are available at a low price, such as Shimano's WH-R560 for 270 euros.
