Hardly any other innovation in road bike technology has led to such heated discussions as the disc brake. Critics criticised the more complicated maintenance, higher weight and poorer aerodynamics compared to rim brakes. Supporters of the disc, on the other hand, tended to focus on the fact that the technology also makes new rim designs possible, which in turn could eliminate some of the disadvantages: Because braking is no longer required on the rim rings, wheels could not only be made more durable, but also lighter and more aerodynamic.
