Single test: DT Swiss wheelset
"RR 1450 Tricon": As with all its wheels, DT Swiss states the weight in the name. Our test wheelset weighed 1,490 grams, which still puts it in the upper class of Shimano's "Dura-Ace" or Fulcrum's "Racing Zero" in terms of weight.

The stiffness is not quite as convincing (46 N/mm at the front, 37 N/mm at the rear), heavy riders could push the rear wheel to its limits with hard pedalling. The design is unique, with durability being a key focus. To minimise play under load, the aero spokes have threads at the ends. The nipples have the shape of a Torx spanner instead of the usual square. The flange and hub body are separate parts that are bolted together; the bearings can be fitted into the hub without stress during assembly - good for durability. Special connections between the spokes and rim are designed to prevent the spokes from tearing out prematurely. The wheelset is available with Campa or Shimano rotors, and the tried-and-tested "Star Ratchet" freewheel can be replaced without the need for special tools.

PLUS: relatively light; successful look; suitable for tubular or tubeless

MINUSonly average stiffness; require special spare spokes and nipples; cumbersome quick-release skewers

Price899 Euro per set
