Since the mid-1990s, the Lightweight brand has been synonymous with extremely light and stiff carbon competition wheels. It is only now, a good ten years later, that the competition is upgrading. Mavic and the previously unknown US brand Lewracing are introducing carbon wheels that come surprisingly close to the original.

I always wondered why other manufacturers took so long to copy our wheels," says Heinz Obermayer with a grin. By "us", Obermayer means himself and his inventor partner Rudolf Dierl. Since the mid-1990s, their lightweight wheels have been one of the most sought-after products in cycling and triathlon, but it is only now that the French wheel specialist Mavic and the previously unknown brand "Lewracing" are catching up with products that clearly recognise their role model.

SHORT & SHORT

Lightweight has some serious competition. Mavic and Lewracing challenge the icon among carbon wheels, the three top wheels compete at a high level. Mavic narrowly beats Lightweight, Lewracing wins the weight comparison but loses points in terms of braking performance.
