Italian wheel manufacturer Fulcrum is launching several aluminium wheels on the market with the new Soniq and Rapid Red AL series. The Soniq models are designed for road use, while the Rapid Red AL is aimed at gravel bikers. With the new aluminium wheels, Fulcrum wants to show that this material can still play an important role in modern cycling. Through continuous research and development, the aim is to create products that offer good value for money without compromising on quality and riding characteristics.
The top-of-the-range Soniq ALX model is based on a rim made from heat-treated 6082 aluminium and has a 33 millimetre high profile. The inner rim width is 23 millimetres, which allows tyres from 30 millimetres wide to be fitted. A special feature is the undrilled rim bridge, which allows tubeless mounting without additional rim tape. The wheelset weighs 1745 grams.
According to Fulcrum, several innovative techniques are used in the production of the Soniq ALX. The top of the rim is given a sandblasted finish. Graphics are engraved by laser. The hub has a solid axle and an adjustable bearing preload system. Fulcrum relies on triple butted aero spokes, which are spoked in a 2:1 pattern. This is intended to optimise power transmission.
Fulcrum offers the Soniq AL model as a cheaper alternative to the Soniq ALX. It also has a rim height of 33 millimetres and an inner rim width of 23 millimetres. The tubeless rim tape is already pre-assembled. With a weight of 1895 grams, the Soniq AL is slightly heavier than the top model. The hub is designed for straight pull spokes, with 24 spokes each at the front and rear in a 2:1 pattern.
Fulcrum has developed the Rapid Red AL as an entry-level gravel bike. It is based on the familiar Rapid Red family, but has been modified in a few ways. The inner rim width has been increased to 25 millimetres, which should provide more comfort and grip on uneven surfaces with correspondingly wide tyres. With a rim height of just 24 millimetres, the wheel is designed for manoeuvrable handling. Despite the modifications, the wheelset weighs just 1785 grams.
Fulcrum offers the new wheels in various freewheel versions. There is a choice of N3W, HG, MS12 and XDR. The recommended retail prices are 590 euros for the Soniq ALX, 399 euros for the Soniq AL and 470 euros for the Rapid Red AL. According to the manufacturer, the wheels are now available in stores.
