Standert from Berlin is known for chic and high-quality bikes at not exactly favourable prices. The chainsaw, for example, currently costs 4999 euros, while the frameset is currently available for 1999 euros. For a stainless steel gravel bike, you have to dig even deeper into your pockets, at just under 5400 euros for the cheapest version. And now?
Now the Berlin boutique bike brand has a new bike in its shop. With the Standert Kieswerk, the brand has listened to its fans, who wanted nothing more than an affordable and versatile bike. Maxe Faschina, Head of Product at Standert, explains that the bike was developed with the modern cyclist in mind: for commuting to work, weekend trail rides and epic bikepacking adventures on holiday. The bike is robust, adaptable, powerful, future-proof and fun to ride. Let's find out what that means in concrete terms:
This gravel bike has mounting options for mudguards, pannier rack, top tube bag, bottle or bag under the down tube and attachment points on the fork. The frame and fork can accommodate tyres up to 50 millimetres wide. It is therefore ready and adaptable for everyday use, small and big adventures, for rough and uneven terrain, for short and long tours.
The frame is made of aluminium, which is largely made from recycled sources. At the end of the bike's service life, the frame can also be almost completely recycled. The manufacturer has future-proofed the gravel bike so that buyers can use it for a long time. The Kieswerk has a T47 bottom bracket with internal cable routing. This ensures a clean look and protects against the weather. The UDH derailleur hanger ensures gear compatibility.
The frame material alone does not make a bicycle frame robust, it also depends on the tube geometry and the workmanship. In general, aluminium is rather insensitive. Without having ridden it, we can't say much about its performance and fun either. What we like is that the bike is equipped with 38 centimetre wide handlebars in the small frame sizes. Some other bikes rely on wider wheels. Standert has already proven with the Compact project that the brand also endeavours to cater for smaller cyclists. The crank lengths on smaller bikes are set at 165 millimetres.
The Standert Kieswerk is only available as a complete bike, in three colours and two equipment variants. Price? With Shimano GRX600 the Kieswerk costs 2449 euros, equipped with Sram Apex AXS 3249 euros.
In most respects, the SRAM version and the Shimano version do not differ from each other. The SRAM Apex AXS models are equipped with a fully integrated stem and carbon wheels from Scope. This version is also 900 grams lighter - and 800 euros more expensive. In the table below, the points where there are differences are formatted in bold.
