French mail order company Decathlon is once again launching a bike on the market that is priced well below the competition: The Triban GRVL 120 Disc aluminium gravel bike costs 599 Euro. Just how much riding fun a bike in this price category can provide has already been shown by our other tests of the brand. We will soon be presenting the GRVL 120 in detail in our print edition. Until then, let's take a look at the facts that are already available.
The aluminium bike is equipped with a Microshift 1×10 groupset and has a total weight of 10.95 kilograms in size M. From XS to XL, it will be available in five sizes, each as a men's and women's model. According to the manufacturer, the longer top tube, lower standover height and shorter stem should result in a more upright riding position typical of gravel bikes. However, the first product photos surprised us with an extremely upright position, even for gravel bikes. Curious against this background: detailed geometry data for the bike cannot currently be found on the Decathlon website.
Gravel bike for beginners?
Eyelets allow the bike to be converted into a commuter bike with pannier racks and mudguards. However, complete bikepacking equipment cannot be stowed on the bike. The 38 millimetre wide Hutchinson tyres are rather narrow - and these are already the maximum permitted by the fork! The bike is likely to reach its limits on rough terrain in particular.
Decathlon originally announced a sales launch for mid-March. However, the supply bottlenecks and logistical problems caused by the coronavirus crisis have led to a longer delay - the bikes are not yet available on the mail-order retailer's website.
