"Palta" was the name of Basso's first gravel bike three years ago, which consistently favoured 1x11 drivetrains. Now the Italians are presenting the successor model "Palta II".
The Italians limited themselves to comparatively minor updates for the successor to the Palta presented in 2018. The geometry is almost unchanged, only the riding position is slightly more upright. A seatpost with more flex and 45 instead of 42 millimetre wide tyres are also intended to increase comfort. With compatible 27.5-inch wheels, even more voluminous tyres would be possible.
The Palta II should be faster thanks to the revised frame shape. In particular, the rounded fork and the new carbon handlebars are designed to offer less surface area for the wind to attack. In line with the trend, the off-road bike now also comes with integrated cables. A practical detail alongside the three mounting options for a bottle cage and top tube bag are the hollow thru axles, in which a mini tool can be stowed.
Until now, the Dolomites have not necessarily been considered a favourite spot for gravel riders. But on the forest paths, trails and gravel tracks around the imposing Sella massif, the Palta II felt surprisingly at home and was very well balanced. Only at the absolute limit - steep descents on rough and loose gravel - did the bike become nervous.
Basso offers its new off-road bike in five sizes and a total of 13 equipment variants with single or double drivetrains from Campagnolo, SRAM and Shimano. The entry-level version with a 2x GRX groupset costs €3,999, while the top-of-the-range version with a 1x Ekar groupset and Shamal wheels costs €6,419. The frameset is available for 2,899 euros.
