The French outdoor retailer Decathlon already offers a wide range of gravel bikes under its various brands. We have already taken a close look at the Riverside GCR, the Tribal GRVL 900 and the Van Rysel E-GRVL AF e-gravel bike. Now Riverside is presenting a gravel bike specially designed for bikepacking: the Touring 920, which is equipped with wide tyres and wide handlebars and promises fun on long tours. With a price of 1699 euros, it is also a real challenge.
The Riverside Touring 920 has a triple-butted aluminium frame combined with a carbon fork. The aluminium tube varies in thickness at three points in order to achieve an optimum balance between weight and stability. This stability is important as a total of 33 mounting points offer numerous options for attaching pannier racks, mudguards and various bikepacking bags to the bike, transforming it into a fully equipped bikepacking bike. The internal cable routing creates space on the frame and ensures a clean look, but can be more difficult to maintain and repair in the event of a breakdown on the road. The particularly wide and flared handlebars (with a 24° flare) are also designed for long tours.
Another crucial contact point, the saddle, is a Brooks Cambium C15 Carved. This saddle is made of natural rubber and nylon cover and has a large cut-out to ensure central relief.
The Riverside Touring 920 is equipped with a Sram Rival groupset that offers 1x11 gearing. This has a 32 chainring, which can be converted to up to 40 teeth, and an 11-42 cassette, which covers a wide range of gear ratios and makes even steep climbs manageable. The crank lengths vary depending on the frame size: 170 mm for S/M and 175 mm for L/XL. The hydraulic Sram Rival disc brakes are known for their reliable braking power, regardless of weather conditions.
In addition, the 29-inch Vittoria Terreno tyres with a generous width of 2.25 inches (57 mm) are fitted, ensuring optimum grip and a high level of riding comfort on both asphalt and unpaved roads.
The integrated Shimano Deore XT hub dynamo is particularly useful, which, together with the Cycle2Charge USB charger, offers the option of charging smartphones, GPS devices or power banks while riding. The additional weight could prove useful, even though the Riverside Touring 920 already weighs 11.8 kg according to Decathlon. It is certainly not a racing bike, but it is designed to withstand long tours. And it is said to have proven this impressively on over 500,000 test kilometres around the globe and in all weathers.
Of course, Decathlon also provides the right equipment: the Riverside Touring 920 is compatible with various bikepacking bags from Decathlon.
Decathlon has developed the new ADVT 500 range of bags for bikepacking tours during the warm and dry season. These bags are therefore not weatherproof or waterproof.
Depending on the model, the bags are attached to the frame with Velcro straps, straps or tension belts, which means that they do not require any special screw-on points. The entire range is made of hard-wearing ripstop fabric that is protected against abrasion and damage caused by rough terrain.
All bikepacking bags in the ADVT 500 series are equipped with reflectors and have openings for cables and drinking tubes, for example to make it easier to charge a GPS system or mobile phone while riding or to use drinking systems.
The new bikepacking series consists of two Top Tube frame bags (1 or 1.4 litre volume) with enough space for a wallet, a small first aid kit or a multitool. Prices: 24.99 or 29.99 euros. Plus two Half frame frame bags with a volume of 2 or 2.5 litres, both 29.99 euros, which can be attached in several places. And one Full frame bag with 5 litres for 34.99 euros.
Decathlon offers the ADVT 900 bike bags for demanding bikepacking tours that also take place in the rain. These bags are explicitly waterproof and are characterised by their robust construction. Made from hard-wearing 420D or 600D polyester, all bags in this range are highly resistant. The thermoformed shells provide additional stability even in rough terrain. The ADVT 900 bags are IPX6 waterproof, which means that the contents remain reliably protected even in heavy rain. The bike bags are equipped with coated straps, TPU spacers and robust aluminium hooks with a locking system. The weatherproof bikepacking bags also have reflectors and openings for cables and drinking tubes to provide additional functionality.
The "Harness Bikepacking" saddlebag attachment offers a stable mount for saddlebags (price: 54.99 euros >> available here). The waterproof roll-top closure of the 6 to 15 litre saddle bag itself and the waterproof material make it ideal for storing equipment. Its price, on the other hand, is only 19.99 euros >> available here.
The robust and also waterproof handlebar bag with a volume of 5 to 15 litres can be attached to the handlebars. The separately available Bracket costs a little more again at 49.99 euros, the Handlebar bag again 19.99 euros.
The Bikepacking Top Tube bag with a volume of 1 litre is compact and ideal for everything that needs to be kept accessible. The bag can be opened with the Fidlock magnetic fastener. Price: 34,99 Euro >> available here.
