After the Blockhaus stage, the Giro moves from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Adriatic. In Chieti, the capital of Abruzzo and home of the short-time Rosa winner Giulio Ciccone (Lidl - Trek), stage 8 starts quietly at first. After a slight wave down to the water, the course then leads completely flat towards the north before reaching Cupra Marittima after just under 100 kilometres. There, the route bids farewell to the sea and enters the mountainous hinterland.
A mountain classification combination of a triple and a quad then brings the peloton to Fermo for the first time. But the big finish is still waiting there. Or rather the steep one. There are only two 4th category mountain classifications left, but they are tough. Both have a gradient of over 20 per cent at the top. The Muro di Capodarco marks the start seven kilometres before the finish. At the three-kilometre mark, the race continues with the Muro di Via Reputolo - 800 metres with an average gradient of 14 per cent.
But that is by no means the end. The last kilometre also has double-digit gradients. There are also sections of cobblestones.
Only once before has a stage of the Giro ended in Fermo. Back then, in 1972, Gianni Motta won here. Six years earlier, he had won the Tour of Italy. So he knows how to climb. However, it was not as demanding as this year. There is no way that a closed field will be racing for victory. Anything other than a small group would be a big surprise.
As so often in this Giro, sprightliness plays a prominent role on this day too. The finale has the character of a classic, reminiscent of the Strade Bianche or the Flèche Wallonne. Actually, this would also be something for Ciccone, who could add another chapter to his pink dream come true with a quasi-home victory. But the Giro has also seen an aggressive Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who takes every opportunity to attack or to take a stage win. And in the form in which the Dane is currently presenting himself, he is always the favourite as soon as it goes uphill. Even if the very short extreme efforts are not really his speciality.
