North of Naples in Formia, at the end of the first week of the Giro, the starting signal is given for the longest stage of the tour, which is also the first mountain finish. The first small warm-up for the day comes on an extra lap around the starting town on the coast, before heading inland into the Abruzzo region.

Travelling mainly northwards, the terrain remains flat until halfway through the stage. Only then does it head into the Apennines. The first mountain classification of the day is taken in Roccaraso. At just under seven kilometres long with an average gradient of 6.5 percent, the 2nd category climb, which is preceded by an uncategorised climb and followed by another, is a foretaste of the finale at the Blockhaus.

The mountain with the German name, which was once used for military purposes, is approached via Roccamorice. Theoretically, the Blockhaus could be driven almost to the summit at an altitude of 2100 metres, but the day's destination awaits at an altitude of 1665 metres between the lowest ski lifts at a point where a road joins from another direction. This avoids a dead-end solution, which makes things much easier, especially from an organisational point of view.

But even without the last 500 metres of climbing, the pros have their work cut out for them. The final climb is 13.6 kilometres long and still adds up to 1141 metres in altitude. That's an average gradient of 8.4 per cent. There are hardly any extremes, the climb is quite even, the bottom a little flatter. Shortly before the finish, there is a mini descent to build up momentum for the final sprint.

Sporting assessment of stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia 2026

Eddy Merckx was the first to win a Giro stage on the Blockhaus in 1967. It was also his first victory in a Grand Tour. There were six more finishes in the following years. Jai Hindley last won in 2022 - in the end, he won the tour.

This year, the battle for the maglia rosa will really open up here. However, if Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) shows the dominance with which he has dominated his season so far, the tension could quickly be gone. In any case, the very steep Blockhaus favours the extremely lightweight Dane, just like Hindley (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) or Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates - XRG). Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CMG) or Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) or Thymen Arensman (Netcompany INEOS), who are somewhat heavier, will have to work hard to keep up with the rest of the pack.
