Slowly but surely, the Giro is reaching the terrain that has always characterised it: Mountains. From Praia a Mare on the Tyrrhenian Sea with a detour to the east, the route continues northwards into the foothills of the southern Appennines. Over the course of the day there are 4100 metres in altitude. Almost 900 of these are already completed by the first mountain classification of the day (3rd category) after just 27 kilometres.
The middle section of the day is a little quieter before the last third of the 203 kilometres brings the most difficult climb of the tour to date. The Montagna Grande di Viggiano (2nd category) is really steep. The 6.6 kilometres have an average gradient of more than nine per cent, with 15 per cent at the top. The next 30 kilometres remain slightly undulating before a long descent leads to Potenza, the capital of the Basilicata region.
Their momentum is slowed down by a small counter-climb in the last five kilometres before the route itself becomes twisty in Potenza and leads uphill again with a gradient of up to five per cent in the last kilometre, which is then relatively straight.
Potenza has seen many finishes of the Giro in the past, with the city being frequently visited between the 60s and 80s. In the new millennium, there were only two arrivals in the town of 60,000 inhabitants. In 2001, Danilo Hondo won the bunch sprint. In 2022, it was Koen Bouwman who won out of a breakaway formation.
The scenario of the last Potenza finale is also far more likely this year than a sprint of the peloton, which is unrealistic. Four years ago, the stage also led over the Montagna Grande di Viggiano, which is simply too steep to be feasible for sprinters. However, it is still too far to the finish to be really relevant to the classification. Nevertheless, it is a first stage. Those who lose (a lot of) time here will still have a tough two weeks ahead of them.
A large group with the favourites for overall victory should therefore finish together. Perhaps a few breakaways will make it across the line ahead of them and decide the day in their favour.
