Just as the Italian capital is the finish line of the entire Giro, the Grande Partenza 2026 ends in the Bulgarian capital. Sofia is the finish of stage 3, with the start in Plovdiv. The 175-kilometre section thus connects the two most populous places in the country.

Initially, the route heads west, but in the second part of the day it increasingly heads north. The route crosses the Rila Mountains - the highest on the entire Balkan Peninsula. The Borovets Pass has to be crossed. The winter sports resort lies at an altitude of more than 1300 metres. The climb, which is a good nine kilometres long, has an average gradient of 5.4 percent.

After the pass, a good 70 kilometres to the finish await the peloton. These mostly involve a slight gradient. Once Sofia is reached, it's almost all straight ahead. The finishing straight is basically eight kilometres long, with only a very slight bend to the left in the absolute finale, which is hardly noticeable.

Sporting assessment of the 3rd stage of the Giro d'Italia 2026

Although the highest mountain of the Grande Partenza is on the agenda, anything other than a bunch sprint in Sofia would be a huge surprise. The route from the highest point of the day to the Bulgarian metropolis is still long enough for the fast men to catch up with the peloton if they get left behind on the long, but fairly even climb, which falls into the category of a rolling mountain.

The pace in the peloton won't be too high at this point anyway, because the classification riders know that they can't make a difference on this stage. At best, the sprinter teams themselves could try to pull each other's punches here or push the captain of the other team a little more lactic energy into their legs.

There shouldn't be much to gain for any breakaway riders on this day either, unless the peloton makes a complete miscalculation or something completely unpredictable happens. The sheer endless, kilometre-long boulevard to the finish line within sight of the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral alone is a disaster for any breakaway.

In the event that it rains, special care is required on the last few metres. The last 150 metres lead over smooth cobblestones, which could be extremely slippery in case of doubt.
