The Giro has an unusually large number of time trials this year. Of the more than 70 kilometres against the clock, the first 19.6 are directly on stage 1. After the first 16 kilometres are flat, the rest is profiled.

The last three kilometres of stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia 2023 lead through the old town of the finish town of Ortona and feature a climb that is up to eight per cent steep as well as several hairpin bends and right-angled bends. The last 750 metres are relatively flat with a gradient of two per cent. However, the 300 metre long finishing straight features cobblestones.

The split time is taken twice along the way. The first time is at kilometre 9.8 directly at the halfway point of the race, then again before the climb at kilometre 16.8. At the finish of stage 1, the jerseys for the overall leader, the best young professional and the points classification as well as the first points for the mountain jersey are awarded.

Sporting assessment of the 1st stage

Time trial specialists of the calibre of Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) or Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) are in their element on this course and will decide the victory among themselves. In the overall classification, the less strong time trialists among the Tour specialists will have to keep the gap to a minimum. A rider like Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) will do everything in his power to take as much time off the competition as possible on the first day. The Belgian is also a hot contender for victory on the day.
