Thanks to its location on the edge of the Black Forest, the city of Freiburg has an almost unlimited choice of climbs - including very long ones. The Schauinsland is Freiburg's local mountain and the segment is based on the most important German mountain time trial. The Schauinslandkönig has been offering a comparison of performance on the mountain since 2007 - with a brief interruption. The variety of classifications is unrivalled: Handicap athletes, folding bikes, inline skis, scooters, tandem bikes, unicycles, children's bike trailers and others take part in their own class. Around 1,200 participants battled against gravity in last year's Schauinslandkönig. This year, the queen and king of the Schauinsland will be crowned on 19 July. At the beginning, the climb slows down the enthusiasm with gradients in the double-digit range. After that, the gradients level off at between six and seven per cent. The many hairpin bends create the feeling of a long climb in the Alps. With an altitude difference of 755 metres, it even comes close to smaller Alpine passes. The ascent via the L 124 is closed to motorbikes at weekends. A brutal alternative to the L 124 is the approach from the Münstertal via the Stohrenstraße with gradients of up to 18 per cent. The KOM was set by Belgian professional cyclist Sylvain Moniquet on stage 3 of the Deutschland Tour 2022. The QOM is held by German MTB champion Nina Graf.
Note: The Hohe Acht at the Nürburgring was not included as the climb is not accessible all year round
