Dresden has a large and colourful road cycling scene - the proof is that this climb ranks fourth in Germany. "Anyone who cycles in Dresden cycles the Grundstraße," says Uwe Lippold, chairman of the Dresden "Picardellics". The Grundstraße is long enough to create a mountain feeling and at the same time short enough that you can cycle it several times. This makes it ideal for interval training or a performance test. It has been a reference climb for Dresden cyclists for years - the Picardellics cycling team, like many others, uses the road to test their form for the year. The Grundstraße is ideal for group rides because it can be reached directly from the city centre and opens up training laps in the Schönfeld highlands and eastern Saxony. Many classic training laps therefore lead over the climb. The reward is a fantastic view over Dresden. The climb is even relevant in terms of sporting history: in 1971, there was a mountain time trial on the Grundstraße during the Peace Tour.
Christian Kreuchler set the fastest time for the men - the amateur cyclist now mainly rides gravel bikes and used to compete in GCC races. The queen of this climb is Henriette Beil, who rides hobby bike races for Petz Racing.
