The Pfaffenwinkel is a hilly region in the south of Bavaria. It is located in the foothills of the Alps and belongs to the administrative district of Upper Bavaria. The extremely diffuse borders of the Pfaffenwinkel are orientated towards the location and sphere of influence of the important monasteries and churches between Lech, Ammersee, Lake Starnberg and the mountains. In the south, the Pfaffenwinkel borders on the historic county of Werdenfels. The largest towns are Weilheim, Schongau, Peiting and Peißenberg. Some also include Murnau in the region. The term "Pfaffenwinkel" first appeared in 1756 in a writing by the Raistinger priest Franz Sales Gailler.
The Pfaffenwinkel is located in the foothills of the Alps. That doesn't mean it's flat there - the climbs are shorter, but there are constant ups and downs. The terrain is flatter in the north-west of the Pfaffenwinkel, south of Lake Ammersee.
Auerberg, Hohenpeißenberg and Kloster Andechs are three not too high, but equally rewarding and magnificent panoramic mountains in the region. So mountain biking can't hurt. The roads and cycle paths are in good condition, but larger connecting roads, especially the German Alpine Road and the Romantic Road, should be avoided as far as possible because of the tourist buses.
