The tour along the Isar is impressive over the entire 300 kilometres. From its source in the Hinterautal valley to Vorderriss, the route is a gravel paradise on firm forest paths with fantastic views of the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains. From Lenggries, the route continues on narrow paths, always winding close to the river bank towards Munich. The high mountains slowly disappear and give way to the hills of the Alpine foothills. From Munich onwards, the scenery changes completely, the views become wider, but the vegetation remains varied. To enjoy the different landscapes even more, it may be worth splitting our route into two stages. Munich lies roughly in the middle of the route and would be a very worthwhile intermediate destination. Up to this point, the Isar shows its wild side and the paths are also challenging. From Munich onwards, the Isar becomes more leisurely and the paths allow for a faster pace. Whether in one piece or in stages: The tour will definitely be remembered for a long time. Good preparation is needed for such a long distance on the bike. In addition to training basic endurance, the mental aspect should not be neglected. One or two long, relaxed rides of around 200 kilometres train your endurance and give you a good feeling that you can manage the longer distance. In addition, a seat position analysis helps to ensure that nothing hurts after such a long time in the saddle. Nothing should be left to chance during the tour either: Clothing, shoes and nutrition should be tested beforehand on a long ride. If panniers are to be attached to the bike, you should have ridden with them already packed. For example, over-packed frame bags can lead to knee pain because you unintentionally avoid them when pedalling.
If you are riding a long distance not as a race but at a basic or leisure pace, you will crave something other than bars or gels. This is completely normal and good. Whatever tastes good is allowed. It is much more important to get enough energy and fluids right from the start, even before hunger and thirst set in. Don't experiment with your diet! All gels and bars should have been tested under stress beforehand. Tip Home-baked bars are healthy and can be put together to suit your own taste; and preparing them increases the anticipation of the tour.
