Travellers approaching the Ore Mountains from Dresden drive through gently undulating hills.
The border between Germany and the Czech Republic runs right through the centre of the Ore Mountains. Our author visited both sides on his stage tour and discovered lonely roads in varied terrain. His altimeter had a lot to do - on the long climbs on the Bohemian side and in Saxony's undulating hills.

We have been travelling through the Ore Mountains in a wide arc for three days. Having started in the Saxon state capital of Dresden, the traffic soon died down. At first the landscape is undulating, quickly followed by short and later increasingly long climbs - mostly moderate gradients, but sometimes also a couple of poisonous high peaks. With all the climbing, we only have to carry small rucksacks. Our luggage hurries ahead and waits in guesthouses in the evening (Info www.radwandern-erzgebirge.de). As border crossers on narrow tyres, we are constantly commuting between Germany and the Czech Republic. "Road cycling is a pleasure on both sides, although you only find the really long climbs on the Czech side," says Alexander Steiner from Olbernhau, who we meet en route and who provides us with tips on the most beautiful little roads.
