The Odenwald is the green heart of the Rhine-Main region. In the west and far below, the Rhine borders the wooded mountains, in the north-east the Main cuts just as deep, and in the south the Neckar flows. These wide river valleys are so practical for motorised traffic that the impractically undulating Odenwald itself is rather quiet. Up to 400 metres in altitude separate mountain and valley - a natural barrier that the Romans crowned with palisade fences against the barbarians almost 2,000 years ago. All that remains of the Limes are a few foundation walls, a group of four sharpened tree trunks and a reconstructed watchtower. But those crossing the Odenwald still have to reckon with fierce resistance today - in the battle against the topography.
